Breadboard works with NextFab Studio and partner organizations to develop and implement multi-disciplinary, arts-based community outreach programming at the intersection of art, design, technology and science. Our programs support STEM education initiatives and Informal Science Education. Program inquiries should be directed to bbprograms [at] sciencecenter.org (please include name of program in subject box):
EKG Exhibition Initiative: EKG explores contemporary art and art practices at the intersection of science and technology. EKG puts forth six exhibits each year featuring local, national and international artists.
Artist Residency Program: Currently this program offers participating artists subsidized membership to NextFab Studio. Breadboard will work primarily with local artists during this pilot year. Selected artists may have the opportunity to exhibit their work at EKG upon completion of their residency. Two primary aims of this program are: 1) to offer artists who have demonstrated skills and knowledge of prototyping technology or other creative tools at NextFab Studio, and will be able to transition quickly into a working routine with minimal need of instruction. 2) to work with artists who have demonstrated clear objectives and professionalism in previous work but have little to no experience with new creative technologies.
Fall 2010 Residency: Sabin+Jones Labstudio
Art in the Air: Art in the Air is a digital art initiative developed through a Breadboard and PECO partnership. The goal is to utilize the PECO Crown Lights system in a new and different way, and provide recognition to local artists working in a digital format. The PECO Crown Lights will serve as a canvas for Art in the Air as an ongoing project. PECO and Breadboard will choose three designs to feature atop the PECO building located at 23rd and Market streets (Philadelphia) on the first Friday of each month through the end of the year. Ask an Expert: Informal talks and Q&A sessions with local professionals from various fields discussing issues relevant to the Breadboard community. Topics of interest include intellectual property, marketing, arts & design, and social media. Ask an Expert events take place at NextFab Studio
Virtual Public Art Project: The Virtual Public Art Project (VPAP) is literally pushing the boundaries of space and art as we know it. VPAP enlists emergent Augmented Reality (AR) platforms to create public art in virtual space. Breadboard will launch a Philadelphia premiere virtual art exhibit in partnership with VPAP in September 2010.This project will generate opportunities for Philadelphia artists to present original work using a virtual art platform and is being coordinated with Philadelphia’s Office of Arts, Culture & Creative Economy. Breadboard and VPAP have plans to develop a larger, city-wide exhibit in 2011.
Student Youth Initiative: Breadboard is developing innovative partnerships with neighboring organizations that will introduce Philadelphia youth to new creative technologies at NextFab Studio. Students will be challenged to pursue their creative ideas in a collaborative workshop environment that combines skills development with creative experimentation and guided learning. Student projects will be art-based, informal learning experiences that address valuable STEM-related educational initiatives.
Breadboard Community Space: A new 700 square foot multipurpose space fitted with basic resources (telephone, internet, computer stations, tables and chairs) will be available to community groups and individuals in need of space to conduct educational classes, seminars, and other projects related to the Breadboard mission. This space is meant as a resource for our extended audience and user community.
More information about these and other projects in development will be added to this page in the weeks and months to come.
